The New Rules for Happy Skin (especially over 40)
It All Stops Working...
You’ve spent the last 30 years figuring out what works for your skin – and then, out of nowhere, it just stops working.
If you’re in your 40s (or beyond), this is usually not because your skin is “failing”. It’s because your skin is changing – hormones shift, your barrier can become more fragile, and products you once tolerated can suddenly feel like too much.
The bad news? There’s no one-size-fits-all fix. No miracle ingredient. No celebrity-endorsed wonder cream that magically sorts everything out.
But I am confident you can get back to skin that feels comfortable – calm, nourished, and like you again.
This list is based on what I’ve learned over the years – not from the 60+ awards (lovely though they are), but from real conversations with my customers, and from living in my own midlife skin now that I’m in my 50s.
This is what I see again and again.
So many women tell me the same story:
-
The products they once loved are suddenly irritating
-
Skin feels tight, dry, red – or it’s just stopped responding
-
The “must-haves” and miracle claims only add overwhelm
And after helping thousands of women in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond, here’s what I’ve learned:
You don’t need more products. You need the right ones – and a routine that supports your skin barrier.
Rule 1 - Less is More - Focus on the Basics
The more you throw at your skin, the harder it is to see what’s working and what’s not.
Many customers come to me with stressed, sensitised skin after layering products that can be too much for midlife skin – retinols, fruit acids, AHAs, BHAs, stripping cleansers, harsh exfoliants.
When skin is reactive, the kindest (and fastest) way forward is usually a simple reset.
Start here for 7–14 days:
-
A gentle cleanser (no squeaky-clean finish)
-
One nutrient-rich face oil serum suited to your skin
-
A moisturiser only if you need it (especially in winter)
Pause (for now):
-
Strong exfoliants and acids
-
“Tingles” and “active” stacking
-
Anything that leaves your skin feeling tight
If you’d like a simple way to try a routine without the overwhelm, I created this Starter Kit with the basics.
Rule 2 - Quality over Hype - Support the Barrier First
When skin starts acting up (especially during or after menopause), it’s often a sign that the barrier is compromised.
That’s where natural plant oils come into their own. They’re not just gentle – they’re deeply restorative.
I use organic plant oils because they’re free from pesticide residues and retain more of their natural nutrients – which means more nourishment, more antioxidants, and more skin support.
I also focus on cold-pressed oils, extracted without heat, so the vitamins, essential fatty acids and antioxidants stay intact.
Think jojoba, rosehip, hazelnut, blackcurrant seed – oils chosen to help:
-
strengthen the skin barrier
-
calm irritation
-
hydrate deeply without clogging
-
soften the look of fine lines by improving comfort and elasticity
Unlike synthetic mineral oils, these oils actually do something for your skin.
Rule 3 - If your Skin is Very Dry or Tight, Go Richer (Emollient Support)
If your skin feels very dry or tight, it’s usually a sign your barrier is struggling to hold onto moisture.
Look for emollient-rich ingredients that cushion and soften – they help reduce moisture loss and make skin feel comfortable again.
Look for ingredients like:
-
shea butter
-
mango butter
-
avocado
-
camellia
-
jojoba oil
The goal isn’t “anti-ageing”. It’s comfort: soft, supple skin that doesn’t feel like it’s fighting you.
Rule 4 - If You're Red, Reactive or Breaking Out, Focus on Calm & Balance
If you’re struggling with redness, hormonal breakouts, or extreme sensitivity, your skin needs soothing, balancing support.
A healthy skin microbiome plays a big role here, and harsh detergents and alcohols can disrupt that balance – making things worse.
Choose oils and formulas that calm inflammation, support barrier repair, and help your skin regulate without stripping.
Examples:
-
Jojoba oil (mimics natural sebum; helps regulate without clogging)
-
Raspberry seed and marula (brilliant for calming redness and irritation)
-
Hazelnut oil (naturally astringent; helps balance without harshness)
Rule 5 - Take Control - You’re the Expert on your Skin Now.
The beauty industry has spent decades selling older women a fantasy – miracle cures, overnight transformations, and the idea that ageing is a problem to fix.
But real power comes from understanding your skin – what it likes, what it doesn’t, and how to support it rather than fight it.
Once you tune into that, you’ll find what works is often surprisingly simple.
Start Here (Choose Your Path)
Dry/tight and uncomfortable: start with a gentle cleanser + a nourishing face oil serum, then add a richer moisturiser/balm if needed.
Red/reactive or breaking out: simplify first, then choose calming, balancing oils (no stripping cleansers).

And if you’ve been made to feel like your skin is the problem – please hear this: your skin isn’t broken. It’s changing. It deserves understanding.
