The Ultimate Cold Weather Skin Cheat Sheet

Freezing temperatures,  frost on the ground and your skin is suffering.  Soothe your dry, itchy skin with a serious hydrating regime to keep things supple and healthy.  

It doesn't have to be complicated or fiddly, here are my top tips for keeping your skin soft, supple and radiant.

The bottom line is that colder air holds less moisture than warm air and factor in the central heating  and there's a good chance your skin is going to rebel.

Dry, itchy skin isn't fun but there's lots you can do that will make a difference.

It's all about hydration levels..

To stay hydrated, skin pulls moisture out of the air, which is a problem in colder weather when the humidity reduces. 

To make things worse, as our skin ages, its natural oil producing capabilities slow down makes it more difficult for dry skin cells to slough off resulting in flaky skin. 

To prevent a rather unattractive skin snow storm effect, invest in a gentle exfoliation treatment, but one which will boost hydration levels with natural oils.

I stress this should be GENTLE!  Scrubbing your skin raw is not going to help.

Steaming hot water is not your friend

    Cut back on the super hot baths and showers. 

    Spending too much time wallowing in steaming hot water, though a tempting option when you're freezing, will ultimately further strip the oils from your skin.  

    If you have to do the toe-dip dance lowering yourself into the bath inch by inch, it's too hot!

    Get clever with oil and water

       If you can't live without a bath, it being the only time you get 5 minutes to yourself in a locked room (and I do understand)  go for a beautiful aromatherapy bath oil which will hydrate and soothe your skin and leave you smelling fabulous at the same time.  

      Try our Soothing Bath & Shower Oil which contains a generous shot of calendula infused oil which naturally fixes all those sore bits.  

      DIY Essential Oils

        If you fancy a spot of DIY, add a few drops of essential oil and tailor the scent to something you love - lavender for a beautifully relaxing soak, ylang ylang and jasmine for a touch of the exotic, or grapefruit or juniper for a revitalising treatment.  

        If you are feeling particularly adventurous, throw in a pint of milk or a scoop of dried milk powder and you will come out with skin so soft, the angels will weep.

        Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise!

          Slather on a serious moisturiser. 

          I am a big fan of oils,  but the trick is finding the right product that works for you. These are some of my favourite oils for dry, sensitive, skin.

          Applying Body Oil  while your skin is damp after a shower takes 5 seconds but packs a real punch in terms of effectiveness;  it seals in moisture, removes the need for a separate body lotion and leaves a subtle scent - win, win!

          The Best Ingredients for Dry, Dehydrated Skin

          Natural plant butters are naturally repairing and form a protective barrier on the skin to guard against moisture loss and soften skin.  Think butters like shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter.

          Humectants to Drive Moisture

          Ingredients like honey and glycerine are humectants which mean they attract moisture and draw it into the skin.  Just watch out for the synthetic stuff like propylene glycol which isn't going to help.

          The Right Plant Oils for Dry Skin

          This sounds a little odd, surely all oils are good for dry skin?  Natural plant oils are not going to damage your skin, but some are better equipped to hydrate when temperatures drop.  In particular oils rich in oleic acid will work best, these have a richer feel and will in turn moisturise more deeply.  Think avocado oil, argan oil, camellia oil, hazelnut oil.  Check out my guide to the best plant oils by skin type.

          Layer your Skincare

            For your face, especially if your skin is on the sensitive side, go for ingredients that are natural and super gentle.  

            Think about layering products together, I like to use a base layer with the super nourishing Facial Essence with Rose & Blackcurrant and then either the Radiance Cream over the top or the Intensive Balm with Marshmallow & Frangipani.

              Party Skin

              Whether you love or hate the festive season, December marks the start of the party season, so how do you ensure your skin is in tip-top condition for all those big nights?

              A pampering mini facial is a great way to treat your skin, giving you a plump, hydrated base for your foundation and make up.  Start by cleansing your skin with a gentle, creamy product, one that will allow you to gently massage your face.  We recommend our organic Carrot & Mango Cleansing Butter, with potent botanicals and containing organic St John's Wort oil which is both anti-bacterial and anti-viral.

              Apply the butter to clean, warm fingers and gently massage into your skin using long sweeping strokes in an upward direction.  As well as removing make up and impurities, by spending a few moments working the product into your skin, you can benefit from a rejuvenating and circulation boosting treatment.  Using your index fingers, gently work the areas between your eyebrows, to reduce tension, then move your fingers outwards from the bridge of your nose towards your temples.  

              Continue this to include your forehead, before moving to your cheeks with the same long sweeping strokes you started with.  Finish off by gently tapping outwards underneath your eyes,  around the eye socket.  Use more product if you  need, so that you can work your skin gently without pulling the skin. You can also add some long sweeping strokes in an upward motion from your neck to underneath your chin.  

              Once you have completed  your mini massage, use a cotton or muslin cloth wrung through with hand hot water to remove all cleansing product, leaving you with fresher, brighter and party ready skin.

              If you are doing a 20 minute shuffle between finishing work and heading out to your Christmas party, have a couple of cotton pads handy so that you can apply to tired eyes with ice cold toner to freshen them.

              Don't forget to spend some time sloughing off any dry skin on your body, though you will need to to this a couple of times to really benefit.  Try a gentle exfoliation treatment that will stimulate your circulation and leave you smooth and glowing.   Try our organic Honey & Rose Scrub with silky organic almond oil and pure essential oils.

              Moisturise well to protect your skin from freezing temperatures and wait a few moments before applying your make up so it does not slide off your face. Then finally and most importantly, go and  enjoy that party...

               

               

               

              Cold Weather Organic Skincare

              It's that time of the year when bare skin becomes a thing of the past (at least until the sunny days return) and opaque tights make a reappearance in our wardrobes.  It also means that the twin perils of freezing air and central heating play havoc with our skin; even oily skins start feeling dry and dry skin takes on the texture of paper.  So it becomes ever more important to up  your game when it comes to your organic skincare regime.

              For your body avoid any type of cleansing product that will strip your skin of the little precious oil it does have.  Gentle is the watch word here - a natural organic soap or cleansing bar is good.  Made with pure vegetable oils and scented with flower and plant oils, it will clean your skin super gently, and the naturally forming glycerine will help attract moisture to your skin.  And not a  harsh detergent (SLS) in sight!  (See our organic cleansing bars here).

              Another good option is an organic body scrub.  Gently exfoliating skin, will leave it radiantly soft and hydrated - and better able to further drink in more moisture.  Or a super hydrating body oil is a good bet.  Gone are the days when you would end up feeling like an oil slick, today's oil blends are moisturising and quick - absorbing.

              The best facial cleanser is a rich, hydrating product, eg, something in the form of an organic cleansing butter or oil.  It takes a few moments longer to apply and remove - but is very gentle and nourishing.  If that does not appeal, and you are happier with a quicker wash off product, again think about a handmade organic soap, we have our own with precious apricot and almond oils here.

              And finally look to upgrade your organic face cream.  You want something that will hydrate and plump up your skin - and which makes any make up you wear look great.  For dry or older skins, a luxurious cream is probably your best bet (our best seller is our Radiance Cream with Rose & Frankincense).  If you prefer something a little lighter, you could consider a facial oil, which I covered in a previous blog.
